The trinca-ferro is a passerine bird of the Thraupidae family, being one of the wild birds most appreciated by Brazilians, especially for its song.It is also called the iron beak, tempera-viola, pixarro, pipirão, verdão (Pernambuco), estevo, papa-banana (Santa Catarina), titicão, tia-chica, chama-chico (inland of São Paulo), tico -tico guloso (South of Espírito Santo) and joão-velho (Minas Gerais). In Brazil there are about seven forms of the genus Saltator, all relatively similar. They are much hunted and appreciated for their beautiful song. Its scientific name means:: Saltator similis⇒ Dancer similar to the tanager. As the Latin terms Saltator and Tupi Tangara have the same transliteration - dancer - the term similis for Saltator similis was found to demonstrate the reason for using this terminology.
